Note that RSRH is conspicuously absent.

To my mind, a yekkishe shul without TIDE or at least some variant of German-Jewishness is no different than a Yemenite shul. An interesting phenomenon of Judaic exotica.

  1. What is it with the Yekis and there obssesivness with their mesorah?(not to be disrespectfull but it is a bit extreme in this single community)

  2. "To my mind, a yekkishe shul without TIDE or at least some variant of German-Jewishness is no different than a Yemenite shul. An interesting phenomenon of Judaic exotica."

    1) Why don't the minhogim and nusach tunes qualify as "some variant of German-Jewishness" in your eyes ?

    2) "is no different than a Yemenite shul"

Would you not be upset if no Yemenite Shuls (R"L) were around anymore ?

The Yemenite mesorah is very old and choshuv, as is the Yekke one.

    So what's the problem ?

    3) Re Rav Hirsch zt"l -

    a) He is mentioned, on the cornerstone page, app. 45% down.

Rav Hirsch is a choshuv and prominent aspect of the Yekke legacy, but not the totality of it. The frum kehillos of Ashkenaz for centuries before him made great contributions, as did others during his time as after.

I think that to reduce the Yekke derech and legacy to Rav Hirsch and TIDE is problematic. Not all gedolei Ashkenaz agreed with him, such as the Wurzburger Rav.

כּבודו בּמקומו מונח, but not every Yekke kehilloh must be an exact copy of his, would you not agree ?

  3. 1. I do not see it as a derech in Avodas Hashem.

    2. The unique derech of Yemenite Jewry in Avodas Hashem is all but snuffed out. The shuls (like the Yekkishe ones) are relics.

    3. a) I apologize!

b)RSRH was only the redactor of TIDE. It was the quintessence of German Jewry. The Wuerzburger Rav's issue with RSRH really concerned communal unity, not TIDE.

    c) Of course not every Yekkishe kehillo need be an exact copy of his, but then don't take up the name of KAJ!

  4. 1) " I do not see it as a derech in Avodas Hashem."

Why not ? Minhogim don't reflect the shitos and Torah worldview of an edah ? They are just unimportant small details to you ? I think they are more significant than that.

Remember, Yaakov Ovinu went back to get 'pachim ketanim'. Sometimes the small things are important.

They can also be viewed as spices that impart important flavor to a Torah lifestyle.

    2) "The unique derech of Yemenite Jewry in Avodas Hashem is all but snuffed out. The shuls (like the Yekkishe ones) are relics."

It might be greatly diminished, but at least a small zeicher remains with/in the Shul. The Shul contributes greatly to keeping it alive, even if in a greatly weakened state. Would you like that to disappear too (R"L) ?

    3) "RSRH was only the redactor of TIDE. It was the quintessence of German Jewry."

    Care to elaborate ?

And what does TIDE mean ? That every Yekke must have a PhD as some think ?

    4) "The Wuerzburger Rav's issue with RSRH really concerned communal unity, not TIDE."

Okay, maybe that wasn't a good example.

    5) " Of course not every Yekkishe kehillo need be an exact copy of his, but then don't take up the name of KAJ!"

    a) Kehal Adas Yeshurun and Adas Yeshurun are names used by many Shuls over the years, especially, but not exclusively, Yekke ones. Was RSRH's Shul the first one to use that name so that every Shul doing so afterward should have to be an exact copy of it? I doubt it.

    b) Some of the people in that Shul practice TIDE I believe. If they don't shout it from the rooftops are they considered as imposters ?

    6) Re "Guf bli neshomo... " -

that can be the case at times, but is it necessarily so all the time ? Anyone who is a stickler for minhogim is in that category ? What about Chassidim who are very dedicated to their minhogim ? Would you make a similar broad generalization or putdown about them ?

  6. Anonymous 1 & 8 (which seem to be the same person) -

    Re comment # 1

"What is it with the Yekis and there obssesivness with their mesorah?(not to be disrespectfull but it is a bit extreme in this single community) "

    a) Halevai they should all be as connected as you seem to think. The fact is that this is only one Shul. Most Yekkes daven these days in non-Yekke Shuls, by far, AFAIK.

    b) Would you make the same comment about Chassidim who are very דבוק in their minhogim ?

    Re comment # 8 -

    a) Are you allowed to use the term Yekkes in that way, negatively stereotyping an entire community ?

    b) "weirdness with the made up minhag"

    1) I find it amusing that you label it 'weird', but then go right on to compare it to a venerable minhog from ancient times. How can you refer to a minhog from the great and heilig מהרי"ל, who is a yesod of מנהגי אשכנז (not only for Yekkes) that way ?

    2) Re 'made up minhag' - Aren't all minhogim 'made up' at some time ? You want to be מלגלג on all מנהגי ישראל ? I would counsel caution and respect instead, I don't think that's a good road to travel.

  7. My wording was completley innapropriate I admit, but still the fact that the Yekis themselves have no mekor for it seems strange ,the chassidim have a tammaie minhagim that has reasonings for everything and I know you have equivlants but this one minhag without a reason is just strange to me and again I ask For Mechila on the wording i would ask acctualy that it be taken down sorry.

  8. No time right now to address all of Litvak's inquiries, but as for whether I would say the same about Chassidim - I would, but am not. Just as a person may only make a racist joke if it is about his own race and self-deprecating, I only have the right to critique my own heritage, German-Jewry. :-)

  9. Anonymous - you are wrong, there are reasons for the minhag. If you don't know something, don't assume that it doesn't exist.

  10. There is an arichus (9 perokim, close to 300 pages) on wimpel in שרשי מנהג אשכנז חלק בּ in which many points are addressed.

For those who want more info online and/or don't have the sefer, there is a good article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wimpel

  11. There is also a minhag here and there to make fun of minhagim.
