  1. First, thanks for the reminder about Rav Dovid's "Tzavei" and "VeTaheir Libeinu". And he sang them like they did in the old world... 20 to 25 min for one song.

    Two points of disagreement:

1- Rav Shimon didn't so much reject Rashi and Ramban on "Qedoshim Tihyu". He rejected the notion that perishus defines qedushah, for the reason you explain. But he says that the mitzvos of qedoshim tihyu is still about perishus. Hashem is fully commited leheitiv es hazulas. We, however, are plagued by other desires. So that the mitzvah of qedushah centers on channeling those desires to serve what should be our life's goal. Even though perishus itself isn't qedushah, it's part of the road to it.

2- While in Slabodka's eyes, Novhardok was about qatnus ha'adam, I think this description is unfair to Novhardok. It's more like boot camp -- your sargeant calls you a maggot, tears you down, to rebuild you stronger than you were before. This was how N fired its talmidim up to resist the Isms of their age, and indeed fight them to the point that many r"l ended up in Siberia. Rather than focusing on the weakness of man, they focused on the strength of the man with bitachon, that only beshituf with HQBH can we be strong.
